Travellers to Ukraine should be aware that the country remains affected by the full-scale invasion, and safety conditions can change quickly.
Lviv is often described as the cultural capital of Ukraine, and after a visit it is easy to see why. Tucked in the country’s west, the city blends old-world elegance with a lively creative spirit. It feels European yet distinctly Ukrainian, a place where cobbled streets and baroque façades set the stage for a modern, thriving art, crafts, and dining culture.

Arriving in Lviv feels like stepping into a living postcard. The historic centre, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is filled with pastel-coloured houses, ornate churches and lively squares. Rynok Square, with its mix of Renaissance and Gothic buildings, is the heart of the city. Street musicians and market stalls create a festive atmosphere, especially in the evenings when locals gather for coffee or wine. The city’s cultural scene is rich and varied. The Lviv Opera House is one of the most beautiful in Europe, with guided tours and evening performances that are worth experiencing.
Art lovers will find museums dedicated to everything from folk traditions to contemporary design. The Armenian Cathedral and the Latin Cathedral reveal the city’s layered history, with influences from Poland, Austria and beyond. Each corner of Lviv tells a story of cultural crossroads.

Haven of Flavours
Lviv’s food scene is as imaginative as it is delicious. Many restaurants are themed, turning a meal into an experience. At Kryivka, guests enter through a hidden door and must give a password before stepping into a wartime-style tavern serving hearty Ukrainian fare. The House of Legends spreads across several floors, each decorated with whimsical objects and stories, and ends with a rooftop terrace offering city views.
For something truly unconventional, Mazoh Café, inspired by the writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch who was born in Lviv, mixes playful humour with bold décor, offering an eccentric dining experience that has become a city legend. Coffee lovers should not miss the Lviv Coffee Mine, where visitors descend into atmospheric cellars to watch beans roasted “underground” before enjoying a strong, flavourful cup.
And for those with a sweet tooth, Lviv Handmade Chocolate tempts with pralines and desserts served in a cosy café that feels like a chocolate workshop. These places combine food with theatre, proving that dining in Lviv can be as creative as the city itself.
Apart from the well-known venues listed on the maps, Lviv offers plenty of small cafés and food stalls, hidden in the quiet corners of the city streets. Without loud advertising but offering no less than top-quality bites and beverages to curious tourists.

Beyond the Centre
Lviv is not overwhelming in size, which makes it an ideal city to explore on foot. It offers a rare balance of history, food, art and atmosphere without losing its sense of intimacy. Foreign visitors are welcomed here with sincere friendliness and curiosity.
Travellers who wander outside the old town are rewarded with quieter, authentic views of daily life. Parks such as Stryiskyi Park offer green escapes, while the Lychakiv Cemetery is a peaceful place filled with sculpted monuments that feel more like outdoor art than grave markers. A short climb up Castle Hill gives sweeping views over the city’s rooftops, especially beautiful at sunset.
What makes Lviv unforgettable is not only its beauty but the spirit of its people. Locals carry a quiet resilience shaped by history and a deep pride in their city’s cultural heritage. They are quick to share stories, recommend a hidden café, or explain traditions with warmth and humour.
Even in challenging times, Lviv’s residents nurture creativity and community, keeping music in the squares, art on the streets, and hospitality in every café. This spirit gives the city its heartbeat and ensures that travellers leave not just with photographs but with a sense of genuine human connection.
